If you know it, you love it!! Apple butter is a delicious spread that's good on anything from toast to pork.  Containing no dairy what so ever, the term "butter" refers to it's creamy consistency.  Essentially a concentrated version of apple sauce, apple butter was a way to keep your orchard's harvest all year round.  Cooked in large copper kettles over open flame and stirred for hours on end (the smell is divine), making apple butter was a community event.  Many places still have an Apple Butter Stirrin' festival, Coshocton is luckily one of those places!! To read more about the hows and whys and whats of Apple Butter, check out this 100 year old recipe as published in the Washington Post HERE.

Located in Coshocton County Ohio, sits a glimpse of living history.  You may have visited as a kid on a school field trip, or been allured by the brick buildings from the highway.  Historic Roscoe Village is a working, breathing, canal era town.  No easy feat in this day and age.  The buildings have stood the test of time, you can feel all the folks who have walked these streets.  And yes, you can even ride a canal boat, pulled by horses!!  It is such a refreshing pace.  Each year, when the leaves turn, they have a festival.  This is their 49th year of Apple Butter Stirrin' Festival!!  Big copper kettles and all!  The smell of the open fire sweeps you back to the olden days.  The streets are filled with vendors, wearing canal era garb.  Spinning wool, throwing pottery (me!) and demonstrating other long forgotten crafts.  There is also a main stage where music and other entertainment will be performed!  My fav bluegrass band, The Wayfarers amongst them!  For more info about Historic Roscoe Village and the festival, check their website HERE.  Stop by for a visit to this truly unique, close to home, town.

I did this show a few years back but my schedule hadn't allowed me to do it again, until this year!! I love dressing up and fall is a favorite season in the foothills here, the trees are gorgeous.  What makes it even more special is that I'll be using my parent's old pottery booth!! A vintage booth at an old timey fall festival, sounds like fun to me :)  The good thing about Roscoe Village is that it's not a far drive from most major Ohio cities!  It's definitely a good time to visit the area if you've been meaning to.  To learn more of where to stay, eat and explore check out the Coshocton Visitor's Bureau website HERE.  Some of my local favs, of course the Wooly Pig Farm Brewery.  Great places to eat include the Warehouse in Roscoe, Raven's Glenn Winery or Unusual Junction.  We have lovely lodging options as well (check the CVB site for more).  Hope to see you at Apple Butter!!
